Automobile & Trailer Rental Agency

An Automobile and Trailer Rental Agency license is required of any person or company which leases or rents motor vehicles and/or trailers to the general public.

Code Requirements

Guidance relating to Automobile and Trailer Rental Agencies is contained in the Maplewood City Code, Chapter 42, Article III. All license holders are required to be familiar with the provisions of this Chapter and with applicable Minnesota Statutes and federal regulations.

Apply for a License

Application for an Automobile & Trailer Rental Agency has been transitioned to an online licensing system (Accela) and is available for access via the Citizen Access Portal. Paper applications are no longer accepted, unless applicants are unable to use the online system.

The following document(s) may be required to be submitted with this application:

  • Permit to Self-Insure (if applicant is self-insured for workers' compensation)

Reviews / Inspections

Applications are submitted to the office of the City Clerk. Upon receipt of the application, the Clerk shall forward the application to the Community Development department to review and conduct an on-site inspection premises upon which such license is to be used. Upon completion the Community Development department will recommend the number of vehicles or trailers to be permitted at any one time upon the premises, having due regard for the following:

  • Effect upon street and traffic visibility
  • Interference with any neighboring property
  • Location
  • Size of the parking or storing area available
  • Traffic
  • Any other matters pertaining to safety and appearance as these matters affect the public interest

Expiration / Renewal

License term runs August 1 through July 31, annually. Prior to expiration of the license, notification of renewal will occur through email and licenses may be renewed online via the Citizen Access portal.
