2019 Buckthorn Curb-Side Pick-up

Monday, October 28, 2019

Maplewood residents who remove large volumes of buckthorn from their properties will qualify for free curbside pick-up of buckthorn this fall (no other trees or shrubs will be picked up). You must have enough buckthorn to fill more than a large pickup truck. If you do not have enough buckthorn to qualify, recruit your neighbors and we will include your block. This year, pickup is scheduled for the week of October 28th. Register by 3:00 pm, Thursday, October 24that www.maplewoodnaturecenter.com. Click on the RegisterOnline-Go button, or call 651-249-2170. You will receive a confirmation with stacking and other instructions. There will be no early or late pick-ups.

2019 Buckthorn Curb-Side Pick-up and Disposal Information

Buckthorn is an aggressive, invasive European shrub invading our woodlands that prevents the growth of native plant species.  We encourage residents to remove it from their properties.  Unlike native shrubs, it retains green leaves late into the fall, long after other leaves have turned color or fallen.  This is the easiest way to identify buckthorn and the best time for removal.  To avoid accidental removal of beneficial dogwoods and cherries, we urge residents to wait until fall before removing their buckthorn.

Tips for identifying buckthorn, effective removal methods, what to do with yard waste and other information can be found on the city’s Buckthorn Management page: https://maplewoodmn.gov/1055/Buckthorn-Program.

Don’t have enough buckthorn for a pick-up and your neighbors aren’t interested?  Want to continue removing buckthorn beyond the pick-up date? Bring cut buckthorn to a Ramsey County Compost site that accepts brush.  Ramsey County Yard Waste Site information is found here: http://www.co.ramsey.mn.us/ph/rt/yard_waste_collection_sites.htm.

Attend a free Buckthorn Removal Demonstration and Removal at Applewood Preserve (For Adults); Saturday, September 7, 10:00 am–12:00 pm   Learn how to identify common and glossy buckthorn and the beneficial look-alikes you should protect. We’ll discuss updated best management practices, weed establishment vs native regrowth after removal. Learn how to safely use buckthorn herbicides. Try out your new skills by cutting and treating buckthorn, to earn a Buckthorn Blaster to take home! Participants must wear personal protection equipment: long pants, long sleeved shirt, shoes plus long socks; and chemical resistant gloves (only butyl rubber, nitrile rubber, neoprene rubber or viton.  No cloth, leather or household latex). We will supply eye protection.
