Maplewood Spring Clean Up FYI
The City’s annual Spring Clean Up will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Aldrich Arena.  The event provides residents with the opportunity to properly dispose of and recycle items that are not typically accepted through their curbside trash and recycling service.  Items accepted for a reduced fee or for free include:

  • appliances
  • electronics
  • bulky metals
  • tires
  • furniture (including mattresses and box springs)
  • carpet
  • bicycles (any condition)
  • small engines
  • reusable clothes (new this year)
  • household hazardous waste
  • paper shredding of confidential documents

Residents are encouraged to bring a food or cash donation to support Second Harvest Heartland, a local food shelf.  For a full list of items accepted and fees, visit the Maplewood’s website at www.maplewoodmn.gov/cleanups.

City Council and Environmental and Natural Resources Commission volunteers are needed to assist with checking in residents at the entry gate.  This is a great opportunity to meet and greet Maplewood residents, all while helping the environment.

Maplewood Business Council meetings (MBC) and the St. Paul Chamber Business Education Series schedule of events is listed below:

Updates from Staff and Council:

New Maplewood Moose Lodge Building
The Maplewood Moose Lodge is hosting a neighborhood open house next Wednesday – April 10 at 6 p.m. – to discuss the new home they seek to build on vacant land located at Hazelwood Street and County Road D East. All property owners within 500 feet of this site are being invited by the Moose to this meeting. The meeting will take place at the existing Moose Lodge located at 1946 English Street in Gladstone. In the next few weeks, the Moose Lodge will be submitting formal land use applications to the city to receive approval to build their new facility.

Late last year the city sold vacant property at County Road D East and Hazelwood Street to the Maplewood Moose Lodge for its new club building. The Moose Lodge and the City of Maplewood have a purchase agreement for the existing club site in Gladstone – closing is scheduled to take place later this spring. The Moose’s existing site neighbors the proposed Rush Line Station in Gladstone and is a key redevelopment parcel.

Council Calendar Update
Staff have been meeting to review and refine our internal process for scheduling, notifying, requesting, etc. people and resources for our public events.  As part of this internal process events are then placed on certain calendars, the new Sharepoint Intranet site being one of the primary locations.  Currently the City Council receives a calendar as a PDF attached to the FYI each week which shows upcoming events.  We are currently in the process of creating a Sharepoint site specifically for the City Council where you could then find not only the calendar of events but also potentially this weekly FYI, links to Council resources, important contacts and many other items.  The conversation is ongoing but expect to see a rough draft of the site by the end of April.

Comcast Cable Franchise Renewal Update
For the last month staff has been meeting weekly with Comcast in regards to the renewal of their cable franchise agreement.  With each meeting we get closer to a final agreement, progress continues to be made albeit maybe not as fast as we’d prefer.  We anticipate bringing a proposed franchise agreement renewal to Council for discussion in May.
