Updates from Staff and Council

Maplewood receives Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.  The City of Maplewood has once again been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).  The award, which is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting, was presented to the City's finance department for Maplewood's 2018 Budget and Capital Improvement Plan.

The award represents a significant achievement by the City of Maplewood.  It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.  In order to receive the budget award, Maplewood had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation.  These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device.

There are over 1,600 participants in the Budget Awards Program in the United States and Canada.  Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

Government Finance Officers Association is a major professional association serving the needs of local, state, and provincial government officials and finance practitioners.  The association is headquartered in Chicago, IL, with offices in Washington, D.C.

Metropolitan Council Sewer Lining Project Update

No doubt you have seen the large black pipes and the work that is taking place along Highway 61.  This is a major sanitary sewer rehabilitation project led by the Metropolitan Council on their sewer interceptor line.  The large black pipes you see are the temporary conveyance system that was installed to handle flows while the work takes place.  By the end of July of 2018 they are expected to have finished with the lining of the interceptor line.  Work will continue through the summer of 2018.  Removal of the temporary conveyance system will take place during the fall of 2018 with restoration work planned for the spring of 2019.

Ice Cream Social. On Thursday, June 14th, The  Minnesota Food Association/The Food Group held an Ice Cream Social to gather community feedback on the proposed project to turn 3 acres of Harvest Park into an urban farm, in partnership with the City of Maplewood.

We had a good turnout including students and professor from the Horticulture program at Century College,  community gardeners from Harvest Community Garden, neighbors and community members, a representative of Community Education from District 622, and members of the Parks and Recreation Commission.

Participants gave feedback on the park in several ways including writing feedback on flip charts and painting and drawing their vision for the space on a large canvas. There was also the chance to plant some cover crop seeds and look at the site design. We served delicious ice cream from Sweet Science, a local business based in St. Paul.  We are thankful to Ramsey County SHIP for funding this community engagement event.

Green Step Cities Award.  On June 21 the City of Maplewood received the GreenStep Cities Step 5 award at the League of MN Cities Conference in St. Cloud.  They present the awards during the Minnesota Cities Awards Show and Dinner on Thursday evening (https://www.lmc.org/page/1/2018AC-GreenSteps.jsp?ssl=true).   For your information the City’s public work’s department just installed six GreenStep Cities signs on population signs throughout Maplewood.
