Mission Statement



To protect public health, safety and welfare by ensuring that land use and buildings meet applicable city codes, regional goals and state and Federal laws.  The department will guide future growth and construction in the city that enhances economic development while conserving natural resources in accordance with the goals and policies of the Maplewood Comprehensive Plan.

2017 EEDD Annual Report

Environmental and Economic Development Department staff has created an annual report to illustrate how the board and commissions and staff work together to ensure the quality development of Maplewood. This includes reviews done by the Community Design Review Board, Environmental and Natural Resources Commission, Housing and Economic Development Commission and the Planning Commission.

2018 Business Engagement Report

In 2018, Maplewood partnered with the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce to conduct a business engagement program in order to reach out to the business community. The 23 visits allowed the City and Chamber to gather a set of data that will prove useful in future policy and planning conversations, but there was also an opportunity to thank businesses for investing in the City of Maplewood.

2018 Objectives


  • Expand economic development efforts through pro-active actions that stimulate housing and non-residential development, including redevelopment of strategic areas of the City. 
  • Protect public’s health and improve the quality of life of the citizens of Maplewood through the prevention of disease, education, outreach and inspections.
  • Execute the design and planning of the 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
  • Educate contractors, design professionals and the public through pre-development meetings, literature, city website, and the permit process.
  • Educate city staff and the community in developing a sustainable “green building practices and methods.”
  • Provide leadership by serving as the staff liaisons and technical experts for four of the city’s citizen advisory boards and commissions.
  • Provide technical expertise and regional leadership on issues related to municipal environmental practices and critical environmental issues that influence the city.

    Michael Martin is the Economic Development Coordinator for the city of Maplewood and the staff liaison for the city's Planning Commission, Housing and Economic Development Commission and Community Design Review Board.  Mr. Martin has a masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs.  He is a certified Planner by the American Institute of Certified Planners.
