Dangerous/Potentially Dangerous Dog Registration

No person may keep a dangerous or potentially dangerous dog in the city of Maplewood unless the dog is registered with the City.

Guidance relating to Dangerous/Potentially Dangerous Dogs and Registrations is contained in the Maplewood City Code, Chapter 10, Article III, Division 5. All registrants are required to be familiar with the provisions of this Chapter.

Applications Requirements


 
  • Dangerous/Potentially Dangerous Dog Registration application
  • Registration Fee
  • Proof of Surety Bond or Liability Insurance in the sum of at least $300,000
  • Front-faced photograph of the dangerous/potentially dangerous dog, taken within 30 days of the date of application
  • Proof of disclosure from property owner (applicants renting property that dog resides on, only)
  • Proof from a qualified veterinarian that the following has occurred:
    • Microchip identification, including name of microchip manufacturer and identification number
    • Sterilization (dangerous dogs only, if deemed required by Animal Control)

Request for Appeal of Initial Determination


An owner of a dog initially determined to be dangerous or potentially dangerous may appeal the determination by filing a request, and submitting an administrative review fee of $100 within five days of the owner's receipt of the notice of initial determination.  
 


Annual Review Request

If there are no additional reports of the behavior described in Sec. 10-189 subs. (1)a or (1)b within a 12-month period from the date of the designation as a dangerous dog, or a 6-month period from the date of the designation as a potentially dangerous dog, the dog's owner may request a review, in writing, of the declaration designation.

 

Prior to the review, the owner must provide documented evidence that the dog's behavior has changed due to environment, health, age, training, neutering or other relevant factor, in addition to an administrative review fee of $100.  In cases where the owner has successfully completed a training program approved by the animal control authority, the administrative fee may be reduced.

Notice of Death/Transfer or Sale



The owner of a Dangerous/Potentially Dangerous Dog must notify the animal control authority in writing, within 30 days, of the death, sale or the transfer of the dog to a residence outside of the city of Maplewood. 

If the dangerous/potentially dangerous dog is sold, the owner must inform the purchaser that the animal control authority has identified the dog as dangerous/potentially dangerous. 

Expiration/Renewal


 
Registration term runs January 1 through December 31st, annually. Renewal must occur on or before date of expiration.
